“What kind of givers are we?”

We usually give through our money. We give to people who beg in the streets, to friends who need financial help, to the waiters at restaurants for tips, to charitable institutions, to the church and many others.

Are you a greedy giver who gives because you want something in return?

Greedy givers are not really givers, they are traders. They trade money or something they possess for the things that they want.

Are you a stingy giver who gives the minimum requirement?

Stingy givers give because it is required for them to give. They give because they want to impress others. They give because they only want praise.

Are you a cheerful giver who gives because of understanding that God has provided them something to give?

Cheerful givers never struggle in giving, they never measure what they have or do not have.  They measure God’s sufficient supply in order to give.

Now that we learn the 3 kinds of giver, let’s take a look at 2 Corinthians 9:6-11 and learn more about how God ordered giving to be a constant outflow for His constant inflow.

2 Corinthians 9:6-11
Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. As it is written:

“They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor;
their righteousness endures forever.”a]”>[a]

10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.

Let’s use the currency we use here, SAR (Saudi Arabian Riyals) as our acronym to understand better and to remember the points clearer.

1. (S) Sowing – Verse 6

Kinds of Sower

Sparing Sower Sows Sparingly Reaps Sparingly
Bountiful Sower Sows Bountifully Reaps Bountifully

This is the mindset of most Christians today: “I will give so the God will bless me”, “I will give so that God will bless me more”. These people give because they want something in return, they are greedy givers. This is a wrong mindset! Do not control God by your giving. You give because you wanted a car or a house and lot or anything else.

God blesses you because God can bless you and he has decided to bless you. It will never be a reason that you give because you want something in return. Blessings are not given after giving it is provided before giving. Christians must give because God blesses them first in order to give.

Years before, I have been singing the song “THANK YOU” by Ray Boltz. I love the melody of it as well as the message of its lyrics. In the chorus it goes, “Thank you for giving to the Lord. I am the life that was changed…” You see, giving is not about yourself, it is about the expansion of God’s Kingdom. We give so that we may have the mobility to bring others to Christ.

2. (A) Attitude – Verse 7

We have to check our attitude towards giving if it is the kind of attitude that a giver should have.

design ground heart love

The heart must decide whether to give reluctantly, under compulsion or cheerfully.

A. Reluctant Decision – Unwilling to give. They are the kind of people who calculates up to the last penny. They obey but they do not honor.

B. Compulsion Decision – Forced to give. They are the kind of people who do not want to give but they give anyway because they want to be praised or they just want to be seen.

C. Cheerful Decision – Delighted to give. They are the kind of people whom God loves. They give because God enabled them to give without reservations.

All acts of love are giving. When we love we give our:

  • Effort
  • Time
  • Offerings
  • 10%
  • Etc.

So long as we give it cheerfully.

3. (R) Reasons & Results

Reasons why we give

Results of giving

God makes all grace abounds Abound in every good work
God supplies the seed and bread for food Increase the harvest of your righteousness
God enriches us Generous in every way

God gives so we must also give in a cheerful manner. Constant inflow is tantamount to constant outflow. We must be the kind of giver who gives because God gives.

God bless you always!
